Salmon Fish Oil Supplements and Why You Should Avoid Them

Salmon fish oil is undeniably an excellent source of those all-important omega 3 fatty acids. But should you take a supplement made from salmon? Perhaps not, in the best interests of your health.

There’s been a great deal of research in recent years about the benefits of omega 3 fatty acids for your heart, brain, immune system and skin health.

It’s now well known that omega 3s can reduce the likelihood of heart attacks, reduce the risk of some cancers, boost brain health, ward off depression, reduce high blood pressure and lower bad blood fats.

But there’s still some debate about how to get these nutrients. The best source of the most important omega 3, DHA, is fatty fish–but which fish?

Some people swear by salmon fish oil supplements. Salmon are a predatory fish (they eat other smaller fish) and so they have a great concentration of omega 3 fatty acids.

But this also means they are near the top of the food chain so they also concentrate other substances in their bodies that you definitely don’t want to eat.

These substances are contaminants such as mercury, PCBs and dioxins. These are implicated in causing cancers, developmental problems and central nervous system problems.

If the fish are caught or farmed in waters where these contaminants are high, the salmon fish oil made from them will also be contaminated and could damage your health. Manufacturers of these supplements have to go to some lengths to try to get as many of the contaminants out of their product as they can.

But there is another way to get those omega 3s safely and that is to take supplements made from an uncontaminated fish species such as New Zealand hoki. These fish are caught off the coast of New Zealand, in cold, clean water that is free from contaminants.
