Weekly guide to a wine lover $ 10 Wines – A Canada Organic Riesling

I'm getting into the habit of tasting of organic wines. But there will be many in this column a very good (in fact, very bad) reason. Organic wines usually cost more than our limit of $ 10. So when I saw this bottle I grabbed it. Actually, I'm sort of a trap. The bottle cost under $ 10 but only 500 ml, 2 / 3 the size of a bottle of cheap wine. So I took smaller sips.

Frogpond Farm Ontario, only certified organic winery in Canada. Do not use insecticides, herbicides, synthetic fungicides or chemical fertilizers and even their electricity is green. So I thought I was just giving them a chance. And I'm usually happy to Rieslings taste.

Wine Review Frogpond Farm Organic Riesling 2006 12.2% alcohol about $ 9.50

Let's start with marketing materials. Description: Our quality assurance Laboratory studies have determined that this wine contains 6 mg / L of free sulfur. Tasting Notes: Made in a style almost from Alsace, this is a hot / cool version of Riesling. The nose of orange marmalade, green apple, mineral and lime. Dry, very clean and fresh with good fruit / rep minerals in the mid palate. Needs 2.4 + years, or try tonight with a Cajun catfish or, if they fail to spice salmon fillets on the grill. (VINTAGES panel February 2009). And now for my review.

The cork crumbled as I opened the bottle. I was not impressed, I can not remember the last time it happened. I started taking this wine alone. The first were long sips, moderately sweet with balanced acidity. I started with the herring Schmalz (a herring oil) in oil. The wine was Appley with good acidity. The food itself was a warm climate, not turn the oven to reheat a whole grilled sweet and sour chicken wings, potatoes and a good portion of the sauce. The wine took hold in the wings. He had a lot of body for white wine. But he could not keep pace with a spicy tomato, garlic, pepper and lime sauce. Is weak or semi-weakly able to turn off the heat. And there was no cal in the Riesling to go with the lime sauce.

The second meal was fried liver and onions. This time I tasted the wine and lime notes of apple was too. The wine managed to eliminate some of the livery the taste of liver. It was more forceful with green beans in tomato sauce.

The last meal consisted a grilled fillet of Atlantic salmon in soy sauce and maple along with rice. The Riesling failed to show an excellent acidity, but it was thin and not a lot of fruit arrived. The dessert was better. When combined with a vanilla cream bar high quality black chocolate-covered ice wine showed good acidity and sweetness with something fruit.

I finished two cheese tasting. With havarti wine was very acidic. With a Emmenthaler (Switzerland) the acidity of the wine was balanced and nut cheese arrived.

The final verdict. I'm just not sure. Usually liked this wine, but given the small bottle, not really qualify as a bargain wine. Honestly, I never would have imagined that is organic, but I think that's how organic wines are supposed to be.
